Our Mission
Dream Boldly. Think Deeply. Read Freely.
We want to share and champion creative and critical voices around speculative fiction. This is a mission we are achieving through our own passion for the genre and the passions of fellow fantasy enthusiasts who contribute their works.
Who are we?
Scattered Flock is a unique literary journal that brings together peer-reviewed academic articles, original stories, thought-provoking opinion pieces, and one-of-a-kind artwork within the realms of science fiction and fantasy. Created and curated by graduates of the University of Glasgow’s Masters in Fantasy program, the journal reflects both scholarly depth and creative vision. We aim to foster a space where critical inquiry and imaginative storytelling enrich one another.
We are an independent journal, not affiliated with the University of Glasgow.
Why we started Scattered Flock…
Free Access Creative and Academic Platform
In a world increasingly shaped by stories, the need for open, accessible platforms to share academic and creative work has never been greater. Scattered Flock was born from the belief that scholarship and imagination should not be locked behind the ivory towers of paywalls. Our mission is simple but vital: to provide a free, beautifully curated space where academic research and creative expression in fantasy and science fiction can live side by side—open to anyone, anywhere.
We created this journal to champion the incredible work of our colleagues across the globe—writers, scholars, and artists who explore the speculative in all its forms. Their insights, stories, and art deserve to be seen, read, and celebrated. While our primary focus is literary—examining written texts through academic critique and storytelling—we also welcome work that considers visual representation, cross-media adaptation, film and television, gaming, myth, and fandom. Fantasy is not a niche; it’s a living, evolving conversation.
What makes Scattered Flock truly unique is that it is curated, edited, and peer-reviewed by alumni of the University of Glasgow’s Masters in Fantasy Literature Programme—scholars and creatives trained specifically in the field. As subject matter experts, we bring academic rigor to our editorial process, while remaining deeply passionate fans ourselves. We know the value of thoughtful critique, but we also know the joy of a well-told tale.
Above all, this journal is for the fantasy enthusiast. Whether you’re a researcher, a reader, a writer, or simply someone who believes in the power of story—we invite you to explore, contribute, and take part in a growing global community that sees the fantastic not merely as escape, but as insight.
